Hannah's Haven

Hannah’s Haven is a heartwarming reading program created in loving memory of Hannah, a beloved HAWS alumni dog whose happiest moments were spent working with children in schools, libraries, and community events.

In this special program, children get the chance to build confidence and strengthen their reading skills by spending 30 peaceful minutes reading to a gentle, attentive dog—either a current shelter dog or one of our HAWS alumni. Studies show that reading to a calm dog helps kids feel more relaxed, focused, and encouraged—often even more than reading to a teacher or friend.

There are two cozy reading stalls available to reserve during each time slot. Whether your child is a beginning reader or a seasoned bookworm, Hannah’s Haven is a joyful place to connect, grow, and share the love of stories—with a furry friend by their side.

  • Read to a dog, Grow with Confidence

    • Kids practice reading aloud to friendly, nonjudgmental dogs in a calm, welcoming environment

  • Backed by Research

    • Studies show reading to dogs reduces stress and improves focus-boosting both reading skills and self-esteem

  • 30-Minute Private Sessions

    • Quiet, private stalls designed to make a cozy reading environment for kids
