Jr. Large Animal Vet Camp
Rising 2-5 Grade
Jr. Large Animal Vet Camp gives kids in grades 2–5 a hands-on introduction to the world of large animal veterinary care! Campers will explore what it’s like to care for horses and goats while learning age-appropriate vet skills in a fun, supportive environment.
Throughout the week, campers will practice basic veterinary techniques such as observing animal behavior, checking vital signs, learning grooming and hoof care basics, and understanding nutrition and daily health needs. Through demonstrations, games, and close-up animal experiences, kids will gain confidence while discovering how veterinarians help keep large animals healthy and happy.
This camp encourages curiosity, responsibility, and compassion as campers learn how proper care, gentle handling, and teamwork play an important role in animal wellness. No prior experience is needed—just a love for animals and a willingness to learn!
Camp Highlights
-
Hands-On Vet Skills: Practice age-appropriate veterinary tasks like taking (pretend) vitals, checking teeth, and observing gait and behavior.
-
Meet the Patients: Get up close with horses and goats while learning how veterinarians safely approach and handle large animals.
-
Grooming & Hoof Care Basics: Learn brushing techniques, hoof cleaning demos, and why proper grooming is important for animal health.
-
Take-Home Learning: Campers create pretend vet tools to take home and remember what they learned at camp!
Morning & Afternoon Care
Drop-off time for those without morning extended care is 8:45am or later. Extended care is available for an extra fee from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. You must register in advance for extended care.
If your child isn’t signed up for morning extended care, please plan to drop them off at 8:45 a.m. or later. A late fee of $1.00 per minute applies for late pickups (after 4:00pm without extended care or after 5:00pm with extended care.) If you think timing might be tight, we recommend signing up for extended care to make things easier for everyone!
For safety reasons, please do not drop children off early unless they’re registered for morning extended care. While staff are on-site, they won’t expect your child unless they’re signed up, and we want to be sure every camper is safely checked in.
Children Information
It is important to inform HAWS of any special needs; physical, medical, mental or emotional, that your child may have so that we can provide a successful HAWS experience. Failure to inform HAWS of any of these needs that are necessary to know when instructing your child may result in your child being unable to participate and a loss of program fees.
Payment and Registration
There will be a 30% administrative fee for all cancellations. There will be no refunds or transfers given within two weeks of the start of the program session.
HAWS Membership Discount
HAWS Members can receive a 12% discount off camp registration. Anyone who adopted an animal from HAWS (701 Northview Road in Waukesha) within the last year is a member (this does not apply to adoptions from other organizations).
To take advantage of the 12% membership discount, use the promo code MEMBER26 at check-out. HAWS will check membership status upon receipt of your camp registration.
